One of the editors of the Hitlerist chief organ, the “Voelkischer Beobachter, Herr Binz, has been sentenced in Munich to fourteen days” imprisonment for alleging in an article published in the “Voelkischer Beobachter” that Dr. Carl Melchior, the Jewish banker who acted as Germany’s representative on the Reparations Commission and was recently a German representative on the Advisory Committee of Finanoial Experts which unanimously adopted his contention that Germany is unable to pay reparations, was serving in his various positions as the German representative on these bodies not in the interests of Germany, but in the interests of the Warburg firm in Hamburg, in which he is a partner.
The Hitlerist papers, headed by the “Voelkischer Beobachter”, launched a vicious attack on Dr. Delchior while he was acting in December as the German representative on the Special Advisory Committee meeting in Basle, where he defended Germany’s case, that she is unable, owing to the economic situation, to continue to meet her reparations obligations.
The German people seems incapable of appointing a tribute negotiator, the Voelkischer Beobachter wrote, without selecting an international Jewish banker whose business interests prevent him representing the interests of the German people. Similar allegations have been made repeatedly before and since in the paper, that Dr. Melchior acted at Basle and at other meetings in the interests of the Warburg firm, not of Germany, and above all in the interests of international Jewry.
A month ago, on February 25th., the Prime Minister, Dr. Bruening, replied in the Reichstag to an attack made there on Dr. Melchior by the Hitlerist Deputy Rosenberg.
Dr. Melchior represented Germany masterfully at the various international conferences in which he acted as our representative, Dr. Bruening declared, and Germany owes a debt of appreciation to this brave and capable man who has a record of great services to our country.
