General Kurt von Schleicher, Chief of Staff at the Ministry of Defence, has already been informally offered the portfolic of Minister of Defence in succession to General Groener, who resigned this week, and is willing to accept this key position in the Cabinet only on condition that Dr. Bruening, the Chancellor, consents to come to an agreement with the Hitler party, by giving Herr Hitler office in the Government, the “Sunday Times” reports to-day.
It is doubtful, it adds, however, if President von Hindenburg and Dr. Bruening are convinced that the moment is propitious for the entry of the Nazi Party into the Government. It is believed that a strong group of Hitler supporters are opposed to entering the Cabinet at present.
There appears to be a general belief among foreign diplomatic observers in Berlin that the present German Government will not survive the retirement of General Groener by more than a few weeks, the Diplomatic Correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” writes.
The conviction also prevails that the next Reichs-Cabinet will be found to include Dr. Bruening as well as representatives of the Hitlerites. The Nazis, it is expected, will be drawn from the more moderate sections of the party, together with some of the ablest leaders of the Centre and Right.
Herr Strasser, the Hitlerite leader, whose recent speech in favour of the abandonment by the Reich of the Gold Standard, aroused great interest both in the Reichstag and in British financial circles, is certain to be included in the next German Government.
