Hitler’s Speech Seen As Possible Move Toward Setting Up Jewish State in Poland

Adolf Hitler’s Reichstag speech today may be the precursor to shipping all German Jews eastward into a half-Jewish and half-polish Reich protectorate centering around Warsaw, according to indications from Berlin reported by the Havas News Agency in an Amsterdam dispatch.

Hitler’s address was regarded as evidence that a sort of Jewish state subordinated to a German protectorate was in prospect for the middle Vistula, the Havas dispatch said.

(Rumors that Germany was considering establishment of a Jewish state have been current for several weeks. On Sept. 13 the official German news agency issued a report proposing “removal” of the Polish Jewish population. On Sept. 19 the Semi-official Belgrade newspaper Vreme reported that Germany intended to establish a Jewish state in Galicia, to which all Jews of German territories would be sent. On Oct. 3 the Berlin correspondent of the Chicago Tribune reported that Hitler had instructed his men to prepare the creation of “a Jewish state of Warsaw where he plans to settle all the Jews of his realm.” The latter report was denied in Berlin.)

In his address today, Hitler called for settlement of the minorities question in eastern and southeastern Europe, through “resettlement of nationalities,” and liquidation of the Jewish problem.

“A solution of the minority problems should be achieved not only in the east of Europe but also in the southeast of the continent, “Hitler declared. “In this connection, an attempt should be made to bring about the adjustment and regulation of the Jewish problem.”

Soviet Russia and Germany have decided jointly upon a division of conquered Poland “along strictly ethnological lines,” he asserted, “and whenever it becomes necessary, we shall resort to a reshuffling and resettling of sections of the population in order to accomplish this end.”

The “most important task” arising from the collapse of the Polish State, the Reichsfuehrer held, is the “resettlement of nationalities in such a manner that the process ultimately results in better dividing lines.” The east and south of Europe ” is to a large extent filled with splinters of the German nationality, ” he said, and “a resettlement should be undertaken so as to remove at least part of the material for European conflict.”

Hitler also reiterated accusations that “Jewish influence” was dominant among the circles that wished continuation of the war with Germany. He charged that only “inter national Jewish capitalists and their journalistic mouthpieces” were interested in continuing the “bloody clash” between nations.

One of Hitler’s usual gibes at British rule over Palestine was included in his speech. “The western powers,” he said, “by no means have proven their skill in restoring order in territories entrusted to their care, as for instance in Palestine. Germany was more successful in Czechoslovakia.”
