Honor Jastrov on Golden Jubilee of His Doctorate

A deputation from Berlin University, the Faculty of Philosophy and from his pupils visited Professor Ignaz Jastrov at his home to congratulate him on the Golden Jubilec on his doctorate. The Pro-Rector, Professor Pompecki spoke in praise of Professor Jastrov’s achievements as an economist and historian. The Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy presented Professor Jastrov with a duplicate of the doctorate diploma, which was issued to him fifty years ago.

Professor Jastrov is 72 years old. He was born at Nakel on September 13, 1856. His works include “The Penal Position of Slaves among the Germans and Anglo-Saxons,” and “The Number of the Population in the German Towns at the End of the Middle Ages and the Beginning of the New Epoch.” He was appointed lecturer at Berlin University in 1885, but owing to the fact that he is a Jew, he was for many years unable to obtain his professorship in spite of his great reputation.

James F. Malone, president of Pittsburgh city council, Sol B. Friedman, rabbi of the congregation, Adolph Grienberger, president, Mrs. D. A. Mendoza, sisterhood president, and John M. Schwartz and Bernath Weiss, chairmen of the building and finance committees, gate the princiual addresses at ground breaking ceremonies of the new Pittsburgh Poale Zedeek synagogue, Sunday afternoon. The new synagogue will cost approximately $170,000 when completed.

The edifice will have an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,000, school rooms, offices, and other facilities of a modern Orthodox synagogue. Work will be started immediately to insure occupancy of the new building for the coming holidays.

Congregation Poale Zedeck is one of the oldest congregations in the city, having been organized in 1881 with 13 charter members, of whom Max Friedman is the only survivor.

Those in charge of the building program are Adolph Edlis; Henry Lawrence, John M. Sehwartz, Isadore Unger, Jacob Weinberger, Mar Friedman, Samuel Hansman, Bernath Weiss, Ike Greenberger, Louis Lawrence, Leo Ferber, Joseph Kleln, and Jacob Gold.

Rabbi Sol B. Friedman has been the spiritual leader of the congregation since 1920.

Plans for the fifth annual convention of the Aleph Zadek Aleph, junior organization of the B’nal Brith, which will be held in Denver, Col., July 13, 14, 15, and bring between 300 and 400 delegates from all over the United States, are going forward rapidly.

Samuel M. Goldberg, chairman of the Denser advisory committee, is directing the preparations. Charles Rosenbaum and Simon Qulat will serve on the committee.

Oscar Leonard of St. Louis, Mo. has sent one hundred additional volumes to the National Library of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. About two years ago, Mr. Leonard presented his economic and sociologic library to the Hebrew University, constituting the nucleus of the Oscar and Leah Leonard Foundation.

The books added from time to time by Mr. Leonard are chosen in accordance with the needs of the economics department as indicated by Dr. Hugo Bergman, head of the Hebrew University Library in Jerusalem.
