The wife of Regent Nicholas Horthy, in a telegram to the Association of Swiss Women, has pledged to do “anything in her power to further the cause of humanitarian principles,” it was announced here today. The promise was in response to a telegram to Mrs. Horthy by the association protesting the extermination of Hungarian Jews.
The Hungarian press press reports that Kazmer Kallay, nephew of the former premier Nicholas Kallay, who was arrested recently for attempting to smuggle Jews out of the country, has been interned. Kallay denied that he had been paid to help the Jews escape, but said that he had assisted old friends because he liked Jews. He confessed that he provided four fugitives with false identification documents and baptismal certificates.
The papers also report that the Minister of Industry has ousted several prominent Jewish industrialists from the Industrial Raw Material Economic Council. They include Leo Budy-Goldberger, Ferenc Chorin, Jenoe Erdoes, Bela Waldman, Baron Jeniece Weiss and Baron Andras Wolfer.
