A House Armed Services Subcommittee is now in the Middle East studying the extent of the United States worldwide defense commitments in light of the growing Soviet naval activity in the Mediterranean. The Subcommittee is concerned with the “defense posture” of the U.S.
Rep. Samuel S. Stratton, New York Democrat, left today to join the Subcommittee which is headed by Rep. Porter Hardy, Virginia Democrat, and includes Rep. Charles Halleck, Indiana Republican, and Rep. F. Edward Hebert. Louisiana Democrat. The Subcommittee is now operating out of either Beirut or Istanbul, a staff member said here. Stratton said on departure that “our purpose is to get a closer look at the Soviet threat in the Middle East.”
