Information concerning a purported effort on the part of the German consul, Dr. W. T. Hinrick, to secure an expression of allegiance to the Nazi government at a May Day reception he held here has been turned over to the Congressional Committee to Investigate Nazi Activities at the request of its chairman, Representative John W. McCormack.

Charges to this effect were made in a letter drafted by the Cleveland League for Human Rights Against Nazism and sent to Secretary of State Cordell Hull,

In reply William Phillips Jr., Under-Secretary of State said in part, “The German embassy assures me that in proposing the health of Germany, its president and its chancellor, a number of those present raised their hands in the Hitler salute, but there was no question whatever of the consul’s asking that allegiance be signified by the raising of the right hand.” President Roosevelt, the letter set forth, was toasted at the same time,

The matter is now in the hands of the Congressional Committee, according to Phillips’ communication.
