An amendment to the Mutual Security bill which would require that the President be “satisfied” and “receive commitments” that U. S. arms aid would not be used aggressively against any nation was defeated today on the floor of the House of Representatives. The amendment was introduced by Rep. James Roosevelt, California Democrat.
A suggestion that the pending Mutual Security bill state that no military assistance be given to any of the Arab countries “unless substantially equal military assistance is furnished to Israel, “and urge the Government to conclude a mutual defense pact with Israel, was offered for House consideration today in an address by Congressman Victor L. Anfuso, New York Democrat.
Rep. Anfuso called the State Department policy during the past year an “erroneous” and “unwise” one. He said that “in its efforts to gain Arab favor, the State Department is going all-out to appease the Arab states.”
