The House Foreign Affairs Committee today unanimously approved a resolution barring arms sales to Jordan prior to March 1, 1986 unless Israel and Jordan have begun “direct and meaningful peace negotiations.”
Passed overwhelmingly by the Senate two weeks ago, the resolution was a compromise drafted by Senate Republican leaders to avert a humiliating defeat by the Reagan Administration in face of strong bipartisan opposition to such sales.
The only Senator to oppose the resolution was Christopher Dodd (D. Conn.) who had called for the clear guarantee of the right to reject the arms sales after March I if peace talks have not begun. Although the House Foreign Affairs Committee members considered introducing an amendment to that effect, the resolution was ultimately introduced as approved by the Senate. It is scheduled to go to the House floor next Tuesday.
