Nazi methods of economic and political penetration into Balkan countries by virtually forcing them to buy her arms was explained today by George Weller, correspondent in Greece for the New York Times.
The procedure followed in the case of Greece was for Reichminister of Economics Schacht to encourage German importers to buy Greek products to be paid for in blocked marks. Then, Greece, with $13,500,000 blocked to her credit, was offered attractively moderate prices on arms while prices on peacetime goods went up.
As a result, Greece recently announced officially that the entire $13,500,000 would be used to buy an order of German arms. The advantage to Germany of selling arms is that the buying country becomes dependent on her for shells for cannon, spare parts for airplanes and experts for cruisers.
