A huge mass meeting last night, which filled Chicago Stadium, heard Senator Alben Barkley of Kentucky denounce Britain’s “closed-door” policy in Palestine and stress that “the plight of the Jews cries out for the opening of Palestine’s doors.”
The gathering approved resolutions directed to Prime Minister Attlee demanding that England “redeem her pledge given to the Jewish people” and thousands of individualso signed prepared postcards addressed to President Truman, urging him to continue his efforts in behalf of European Jews.
“When President Truman asked the British Prime Minister to let 100,000 Jews move into Palestine, he meant exactly what he said,” Sen, Barkley said. “With the support of the American people, I believe the President will be able to persuade the British Government to permit the movement.”
Speakers included Mayor Edward Kelly of Chicago, and Max Silberman, president of the Zionist Organization of Chicago.
