Secretary of State Cordell Hull today reiterated that the United Nations are giving full attention to the problem of punishing Axis war criminals, and added that the appropriate officials concerned are concentrating on assembling the necessary facts that will lead to the punishment of those responsible for the atrocities against Jews and other innocent civilians in occupied Europe. Mr. Hull, however, would not comment on London reports that definite plans for an international criminals court were well advanced.
The reports from London stated that plans have laready been drawn up for the immediate appointment of the court’s staff, and that the American appointee to the court would by Prof. Sheldon Glueck, professor of criminal law and criminology at Harvard University. Prof. Glueck is a native of Poland who became a naturalized American citizen in 1920. It is stated that he has been assisting in preparations for establishing the court for the past several months.
Official confirmation of Prof. Glueck’s appointment could not be obtained here today, but it was pointed out that one of the major points on his proposed program for dealing with the Axis war criminals, contained in the London, report, corresponds to Secretary Hull’s recent statement that the Axis must be required to surrender those guilty of crimes against civilian populations no later than the end of the war.
