President Eisenhower today appealed to every American to “examine his conscience, so that we may be more sensitive to the needs and worth of every individual.” Mr. Eisenhower made his appeal in declaring the week of December 10-17 as Human Rights Week, marking the 160th anniversary of the American Bill of Rights as well as the 12th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The President called for renewed efforts to achieve peace and assure equal rights for all, without distinctions based on race, religion, sex or language.
“Let us remember,” stated Mr. Eisenhower, “that it is only through free and responsible efforts that humanity can make lasting progress toward the goal of peace with justice. Let us direct our actions so as to encourage these efforts in every country by strengthening their foundations in our own.”
