Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D., Minn.) called today on the United States to recognize united Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and said it was “hypocritical” for the US government to condemn Israel for annexing East Jerusalem while it quietly acquiesced for years in the “destructive occupation” of that city by Jordan. Humphrey, an aspirant for the Democratic presidential nomination, addressed a luncheon session of a two-day conference of the American Technion Society. He said the Nixon administration should issue a public statement of support for Israel rather than extend it by executive discretion which is granted or withdrawn by administrative decision.
