Hundreds of fearfll Jews lined up before the Polish and other consulates in Vienna today, the Associated Press reported, seeking visas to enable them to leave Austria.
A number of Vienna coffee hoses were placarded with warnings, “Jews not permitted to enter.” Jewish druggists were told their medical supplies might be needed by hospitals. Some voluntarily emptied their shelves and donated their goods, the A.P. said.
There was some beating of Jews and plundering of Jewish stores, according to the agency. In three Jewish stores big orders were placed with statements that payment would be made later. Suppressive action was taken against a B’nai B’rith lodge yesterday, with storm troopers taking over its rooms, and headquarters of the Maccabi were also raided.
Parcels sent abroad will be searched at the post office to prevent smuggling of money, it was announced. The A.P. said a Jewish woman was arrested without charge after withdrawing 40,000 schillings from a bank. Several other Jews were arrested for attempts to send money from Austria or on suspicion of attempting to flee.
