Zoltan Szocs, formerly a lieutenant in the Hungarian Army, was today sentenced to life imprisonment by a Rumanian court which convicted him of “savage mistreatment” of Rumanian Jewish slave laborers in a detachment under his command during the war.
Three enlisted men in Szocs’ command were also convicted of complicity in the crimes against the Jews and were given sentences ranging from 15 years imprisonment to life. Evidence introduced at the trial proved that of 214 Jews originally assigned to Szocs’ labor battalion only ten survived, the remainder having succumbed to starvation and brutality.
