A new anti-Semitic drive by the Nazis and their sympathizers began today when Stephen Milotay, editor-in-chief of the Government party’s organ Uj Magyarsag, editorially denounced “tendentious news” in the Budapest press and radio, blaming Hungarian Jews in particular and “international Jewry” in general.
Quoting the recent Nazi White Book, Milotay said it proved that Jews were seeking to extend the theater of war in order that Gentiles on both sides might “exterminate themselves and leave the Jews in power.”
At the same time the weekly newspaper Hetfo, pro-Government organ, attacked expatriate Hungarian journalists, especially the editors of the Parisi Kurir, for “poisoning” the atmosphere by smuggling into Hungary pro-Allied propaganda. Hetfo concluded that despite the two “Jewish laws,” the “hundred-headed hydra is more active than ever.”
Meanwhile, newspapers supporting the Arrow-Cross Party, Hungarian Nazi organization, demanded the suppression of the liberal, pro-Jewish Esti Kurir and Count Stephen Bethlen’s conservative anti-Nazi newspaper 8-Orai Ujsag, accusing them of being “hysterical and anti-Hungarian” by hinting that Hungary and other neutrals were endangered by the German conquest of Denmark and Norway and referring to Hungary’s military weakness.
