The Hungarian Jewish community, the largest in the Soviet bloc outside the Soviet Union itself, has applied for full membership in the World Jewish Congress. This was announced here today at a meeting of the WJC-American Section by Imre Hober, president of the Central Board of Jewish Communities of Hungary, who was present at the meeting.
A spokesman for the WJC said approval of the application is expected to be unanimous, thus making the Jewish community of Hungary the third community in a Communist country to become a full member of the WJC. The other two are the Jewish communities of Rumania and Yugoslavia. Until now, representatives of the Hungarian Jewish community, like those of Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, attended WJC meetings as observers.
