Unless the conduct of affairs in Hungary is taken over by Regent Horthy himself, the Jewish position in Hungary will become even more precarious than hitherto, it was learned here today in connection with the appointment of Dr. Ladislas Bardossy, Foreign Minister, to the post of Premier to succeed Count Paul Teleki, who committed suicide after a prolonged Cabinet meeting.
The new Hungarian Premier is known as a confirmed anti-Semite. It is known that as Foreign Minister he was seeking to “coordinate” anti-Jewish measures in Hungary with similar measures in Rumania. Diplomatic circles in Geneva consider his appointment as spelling complete surrender of Hungary to Germany since Dr. Bardossy is known to be a man without principles or courage.
Vienna Nazi newspapers report that new anti-Jewish legislation much more severe than that now in force will soon be introduced in the Hungarian Parliament. The Neues Wiener Tagblatt reports that a “third Jewish law” to supplement the two existing anti-Jewish laws will be introduced by Bela Lukascz, president of the Government party on the ground that preparation for several weeks by the Ministry of Justice but was not submitted to the Parliament because of major political developments, the Tagblatt states.
