Hungarian Jews hope that the Allies will return to them property confiscated by the Nazis which is now being turned up in Germany, Austria and elsewhere, Elias Toeckler, president of the Federation of Hungarian Jews said today.
Toeckler told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the Hungarian Government supports the position that recovered Jewish property should be returned to those from whom it was stolen, rather than placed in a common reparations pool. He disclosed that the Jewish community has established a special body charged with responsibility for securing the return of confiscated property. The Jews, Toeckler added, also hope that Germany will be forced to pay them reparations.
The Hungarian Government, meanwhile, has issued a decree ordering the return to alien Jews, or their heirs, of any land or other property seized during the pro-Nazi regime.
