Jews throughout Hungary yesterday observed a day of fast and mourning, marking the third anniversary of the invasion of Nazi troops taking over control of the government from the tottering pro-Nazi regime.
The Zionist Federation today marked the opening of the election campaign within the Jewish community with a meeting at the Music Academy here. Speakers declared that the Zionists were not only interested in emigration but in improving the present condition of Hungarian Jews. They attacked the government’s rehabilitation and restitution progress as inadequate and demanded “the full benefits of democracy.” They also asserted that the present leadership of the community was too narrow and reflected the opinions of religions groups alons.
