Large crowds today attended memorial services in Uj Pest, suburb of this city, honoring the memory of 12,000 Jews who were deported to their death in Poland during the pro-Nazi regimes. The President of Hungary, Zoltan Tildy, as well as representatives of Hungary’s political parties, government department and churches, participated in the services.
The chief rabbi of the town, Dr. Miklos Muranyi, addressing the meeting, called on the Jews to “build with those who extend their hands to us. Let us break with the past in a spirit of a new world of love and of a now social order,” he said. Hames of streets in Uj Pest will soon be changed to honor several of the martyrs among the 12,000 Nazi victims, Mrs. S. Doebrentei, mayor of the town, announced.
