Energetic action to punish those responsible for anti-Semitic attacks in Hungarian Universities was promised today by Secretary of State Petri following a Parliamentary discussion of the disturbances which led to the closing of the University of Debreczin yesterday.
The Secretary of State declared that the autonomy of the universities cannot be used as an asylum for the disturbers of the peace.
At the same time he made it known that the action of the University in withdrawing the credits of a Jewish student for allegedly insulting the Christian students who attacked him yesterday would be reconsidered.
The anti-Semitic attitude of the Senate of the University of Debreczin was severely criticized during the debate by a number of deputies.
Deputy Fabian, a Jewish representative, pointed to the existence of a secret anti-Semitic organization whose dissolution he demanded. He also called upon the government to punish those
responsible for the disturbances at the University of Debreczin as an example of the anti-Semites of what they face if they should persist.
The government will check any attempts to disturb its policy, Secretary of State Petri offered assurance.
