Assurances that 3,000 Polish Jews, some of whom participated in the battle of the Warsaw ghetto, will be handed over to the Gestapo for deportation to Poland has been given by the Hungarian puppet government to the German occupation authorities in Budapest, it was reported today by an Hungarian diplomat arriving here.
The diplomat suggested that President Roosevelt’s statement of last week, warning of post-war reprisals against those helping to deport or murder Jews in Nazi-held countries, should be rebroadcast to Hungary every day. He confirmed the reports that deportations of Jews have already started and added that the new Hungarian puppet cabinet has issued an order for immediate enforcement of all anti-Jewish laws.
A special cabinet meeting at which new anti-Jewish measures will be decided upon is scheduled for tomorrow, the Budapest radio announced last night.” The new measures are expected to bring about “the liquidation of all destructive elements, including Jews,” the broadcast said. It added that in the meantime all Jewish and liberal newspapers had “either been closed down or voluntarily ceased publication on seeing that there was no room for them in Hungary.”
The Budapest radio also reported that the Hungarian Bar Association has addressed a petition to the new Minister of Justice asking for the “complete exclusion of Jews” from the organization, The Minister of Justice, Stephen Antal, has long been known as a leader of the anti-Semitic movement in Hungary. The Bar Association has 1,484 Jewish members, the Budapest broadcast said.
