Large-scale confiscation of Jewish property was resumed in Hungary this week and Jewish industries valued at tens of millions of dollars will pass into the hands of the government before the month is over, it is reported in the Hungarian press reaching here from Budapest today.
The Fueggetlenseg, official organ of the Hungarian government, states that the authorities have started taking over Jewish leather firms valued at fifty million pengos, about ten million dollars. The registration and valuation of these enterprises was carried out with the assistance of 200 experts and traders, the paper says.
The Hungarian Telegraph Bureau today reported that the conscription for forced labor of all Jewish men and women in Hungary between 14 and 70 years of age is being carried out “in accordance with the regulations applying to Hungarian nationals.”
The report says that Jewish children under the age of 14 whose parents are conscripted for compulsory labor “will be looked after by the Red Cross which is also responsible for feeding them.” The Jews in the labor service will be employed according to their qualifications, and those found to be unemployable will be sent to special camps.
