George M. Hyman, who resigned as executive director of the Syracuse Jewish Communal Center, will assume his duties as executive director of the Central Jewish Institute in September, it was announced here yesterday.
The Central Jewish Institute, 125 East Eighty-fifth Street, is one of the pioneer Jewish centers in the United States and has been a laboratory for Jewish educational methods now in practice throughout the country.
As executive secretary of the Syracuse Jewish Welfare Fund, Mr. Hyman developed the “Syracuse Experiment” in Jewish communal organization, whereby the local Federation, Jewish Welfare Fund and community council have been united in one organization democratically constituted and representative of all elements in the community.
Formerly associated with Dr. Judah L. Magnes in the administration of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Mr. Hyman acted as chairman of the Palestine committee of the National Association of Jewish Center Executives and has been head of the education department of the New York State Federation of Y.M. and Y.W.H.A.’s, establishing an Institute of Jewish Studies at Syracuse University.
