The Convention of the District No. 1 Independent Order B’nai B’rith, comprising lodges of New York state, six New England states and the Eastern part of Canada, including Toronto, Ottowa, Hamilton, London, Ontario, Montreal and Quebec, will be held on May 9th and 10th at the Hotel Astor, New York.
On the evening of May 9th, a banquet has been arranged for the delegates to the convention. Alfred M. Cohen, president of the Independent Order B’nai B’rith, will be the guest of honor at the banquet.
In connection with the convention, a campaign is now being carried on to enlarge the membership of the New York lodges. Mr. Samuel M. Schmidt, who was for some time in Europe with the Joint Distribution Committee, is here as the special representative of the Order to assist in the drive for membership.
JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES
The successful termination of the Emergency Appeal in Los Angeles, Cal., for the Los Angeles Tuberculosis Sanitorium was celebrated by a testimonial banquet in honor of George Mosbacher, treasurer of the appeal, on the completion of his ten years’ service as president of the local federation of Jewish Welfare Organizations.
The appeal netted $45,000 toward the urgent deficit of the sanatorium. The remaining $50,000 is to be raised throughout the country.
Three hundred attended the testimonial banquet. Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin was toastmaster.
With more than $60,000 pledged to an operative fund, the Jewish Hospital Association of Louisville, Ky. adopted resolutions to continue the Jewish Hospital in that city.
Whether to continue the hospital, which has sixty- four beds, has been debated in the association for several weeks. The fact that it incurred an operative deficit of $10,000 last year was the main argument for its discontinuance.
A testimonial dinner in honor of Benjamin Winter, President: and Charles Green, First Vice-President of the Federation of Polish Jews of America, will be given Saturday evening at the Pennsylvania Hotel, New York.
The committee, which is arranging this dinner, includes Z. Tygel. Chairman; D. Trautmann, Secretary; S. Rosenfeld, Treasurer; H.L. Berman. J. Stuckgold, H. Fisher, W. Sussman, I. Herschkorn, M. Smith, D, Morgenstein and W. M. Weinberg.
Ex-Congressman Isaac Siegel addressed the ninth anniversary dinner of the Institutional Synagogue Sunday night at the Hotel Astor.
The proceeds of the dinner netted $14,000, which sum will go toward maintaining the Synagogue Building.
Those at the speaker’s table were Elias A. Cohen, Benjamin Winter, Lester Udell, Harry Fischell, Mr. Siegel, Sol Stroock, Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein and Morris Jablow.
