Arthur J. Altmeyer, executive secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the International Refugee Organization, has arrived in Italy to prepare for the I.R.O. to assume responsibility for the thousands of refugees and DP’s in the country.
As soon as he arrived he contacted the Vatican and top government officials. His chief problem will be to arrange for the Italian Government to turn over to the I.R.O. some 2,000,000,000 lire for the I.R.O.’s first two years of operation in the country. The money is part of UNRRA’s huge financial resources in the country which will automatically revert to the government when the relief agency is liquidated at the end of this month.
