A contingent of 705 Hungarian Jewish refugees arrived here today from Switzerland en route to Palestine. An additional 150 are due tomorrow. They are part of the group released from the Bergen Belsen camp in Germany prior to the Nazi collapse as a result of the efforts of Jewish groups in Switzerland.
Most of the refugees, among whom are twenty infants and many children, appear healthy as a result of the treatment they have received in the six months since their release by the Germans. The bulk of them are young people, although there are a few elderly persons, some of whom are ill. According to present plans, they will embark for Palestine at Bari or Taranto.
A minor incident occurred when the train carrying the transport paused at Riminai. An impromptu parade organized by the refugees encountered German prisoners who were working on the railroad. British troops guarding the Nazis apparently feared that the Jews might attack the Germans, but according to a JDC representative who is accompanying the emigrants, they restricted themselves to flinging a few harsh words at the Nazis.
