The attorney general’s office admitted to the High Court of Justice last week that Israeli soldiers have been acting illegally in confiscating identity cards from residents of the territories, in order to force them to pay taxes or erase protest slogans.
The attorney general’s office told the justices that it would stop the practice.
The court took up the issue after the Association for Civil Rights in Israel filed a petition against the confiscation of the identity cards.
A representative for the attorney general said that orders against confiscating the cards had been issued in the past, but not followed.
The military advocate-general’s office said it will issue orders, within two weeks, defining when it is permissible to confiscate identity cards.
