The United States will press for a new effort ?o solve the Palestine issue by conciliation between the Jews and the Arabs at the ##ig Powers talks which open tomorrow in the New York apartment of Soviet delegate ?ndrei Gromyko, it was indicated here today by an American spokesman who quoted the opinion of U.S. chief delegate Sen. Warren Austin. However, the spokesman pointed out that the American delegation has not drafted any formal proposals on the conciliation question.
Earlier, another American spokesman indicated U.S. dissatisfaction with Friday’s ##ote at the Security Council at which only part of the American resolution favoring formation of a Big Five Committee and pressing for a new attempt at conciliation was adopted by the eleven-member body. The vote; he said, removed from the original U.S. resolution “its substantive proposals with the exception of the closing appeal.”
Observers here point out that of the four nations meeting at tomorrow’s parley–Britain refused to participate–at least three openly favor another attempt at conciliation. The only nation which has not yet demanded such a course is the Soviet Union which, however, with the United States, took-the lead in hammering out the partition decision at last year’s General Assembly session.
