State enforcement authorities, acting on complaints, have launched a drive to halt violation of the Illinois statutes governing the use of the word “kosher” by food purveyors, restaurants and caterers.
The drive is aimed at the practice of describing certain foods as of “kosher style.” Illinois statutes define kosher meat as meat slaughtered in accordance with the precepts of the Jewish religion and prepared and handled under rabbinical supervision. Enforcement officers acting under direction of the State Attorney’s office are investigating complaints of misuse of the term “kosher” and warning violators.
