Sounds of battle have been heard in the Jordan Valley during the past two days by Israeli settlers in the Beisan region. They said that Jordanian Army units appear to be using mortars and small arms in a systematic effort to destroy guerrilla concentrations in the region and drive them out of the area. Jordanian farmers who recently returned to their villages and fields in the border region have reportedly been issued arms by the Jordanian Army. Amman seems anxious to prevent terrorist activities on its soil against Israel, at least as long as the current cease-fire and peace talks are in effect. The Jordanian government is also very much concerned that the farmers cultivate their crops in the fertile valley. Until last September’s civil war in Jordan, the villages and fields along the border were deserted because the terrorists were entrenched in the area.
