What is said to be the most pretentious “star” show ever to be presented, is scheduled to take place at the testimonial dinner, entertainment and dance to be given George M. Cohan and Sam H. Harris, under the auspices of the Jewish Theatrical Guild of America, in the grand ballroom at the Hotel Astor tonight.
The stage, screen and radio artists who will offer their services, include Jack Benny and Lou Holtz, who will act as co-masters of ceremonies; Joe Penner, Belle Baker, Irving Berlin, Sophie Tucker, Paul Whiteman and his orchestra; Georgie Price, Billy Gaxton, Lois Moran and Victor Moore; the Boswell Sisters, Marilyn Miller and Clifton Webb, Rubinoff, Morton Downey, Borrah Minevitch and his Harmonica Rascals, Will Mahoney, Armida, Gus Edwards, and Eddie Cantor and George Jessel who are the president and vice-president of the Guild, respectively.
HIPPODROME OPERA
“Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Il Pagliacci” will open the second week of popular priced opera at the New York Hippodrome tonight. In “Il Pagliacci” two favorites of past Hippodrome performances will return, Giuseppe Radaelli as Canio and Santa Biondo as Nedda.
Two other operas will be added to the repertoire during the week, “La Forza Del Destino” on Wednesday night and “Faust” (in French) on Friday night. “Carmen” will be repeated on Monday night. A feature of this performance will be the Yakovleff Ballett headed by the new Spanish prima ballerina, Monnas Montez.
“La Traviata” will be sung on Tuesday night, “Aida” on Thursday night, “Carmen” at the Saturday matinee and the double bill of “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “Il Pagiacci” on Saturday night.
