Rapidly increasing impoverishment of Slovakian Jews is indicated in a report of the activities of the Bratislava Jewish soup kitchen, appearing in the Jewish newspaper, Vestnik Ua, organ of the Central Jewish Representation, reaching here today.
The article reveals that while for the first four months of this year the number of meals served at the kitchen totalled 32,000, the figure has been steadily rising until, for July alone, it reached 50,000. While from January to April the average number of persons served dally ranged from 300 to 350, in July it averaged 1,650 and even reached 1,800 on some days.
Regular guests at the kitchen include 280 children of the poorest families and workers from the forced labor camps near Bratislava. It is estimated that fifteen per cent of Bratislava’s Jews were fed at the kitchen during July, half of them free.
