The annual meeting of the Jewish Welfare Federation here gave an overwhelming vote of confidence to the civil rights and church-state activities of the Jewish Community Relations Council of this city, Federation officials announced today.
Some of the activities of the JCRC were questioned at the annual meeting, as were other issues concerning the Jewish community. To test the feelings of the 300 community leaders at the meeting, ballots were taken on each of the issues debated.
The meeting voted 123 to 49 in favor of the Jewish Community Relations Council continuing its work on equal rights for Negroes, civil rights in general, and open occupancy. On the issue of church-state relationships and, in particular, on the Council’s concern with the teaching of religion in public schools, the JCRC was supported by a vote of 142 to 28.
Federation officials, however, pointed out that the voting represented only the opinions of those attending the annual meeting, and need not be construed as final results to determine Jewish community policy.
