India has not had normal relations with Israel because it did not want to “create tensions in the Middle East,” New Deputy Prime Minister Shri Moraji Desai, said here today. To avoid “greater tensions” in the region, he stated, “we have adopted the line we adopted.”
Mr. Desai, who is also India’s Finance Minister, spoke today at the National Press Club, where he made these statements in reply to questions regarding India’s attitude toward Israel. India has no diplomatic relations with Israel. During the United Nations debates on the Middle East crisis last summer and spring, India followed the anti-Israeli, pro-Arab policies of the Soviet and Arab blocs.
