Informal negotiations between Israel and Jordan representatives which started this morning in the presence of Col. de Ridder failed to break Jordan’s opposition to the holding of a full and formal meeting of the mixed armistice commission to take up the issue. The Jordanians demanded that a sub-committee first investigate their complaint that the road which they occupied yesterday passes through Jordan territory.
Meanwhile, Menabem Beigin, leader of the Herut Party, wired a request to the chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Israel parliament insisting on the immediate holding of a meeting of this committee for the purpose of discussing Israel’s attitude to the “aggressive act carried out by Jordan.”
(The New York Times reported from Jerusalem today that Premier David Ben Gurion flew to Greece yesterday on a vacation. His trip is private and he is visiting archaeological sites. This is the first time that the Israel Premier has left Israel since the Jewish state was established.)
