The Ministry of Information is to be scrapped under a Cabinet decision taken today. Its departments will be distributed among the various other Ministries–Foreign, Education, and the Prime Minister’s Office–from where they were taken early last year to create the ill-fated Information Ministry. Information Minister Aharon Yariv resigned his post some weeks ago urging that the Ministry be scrapped as an independent unit and rather incorporated within the Premier’s Office.
Yitzhak Rabin, however, is apparently not keen on absorbing all the Information Ministry’s unite — and he recommended today to the Cabinet a scheme under which virtually all the units would return to the Ministries from which they came, Some Ministers, however, argued that the Premier ought to retain an over-all supervisory brief on internal affairs and external information, and Rabin asked for a week to reconsider the breakdown. He is to make his final recommendation to the Cabinet next Sunday. The actual decision to abolish the information Ministry was taken without dissenting votes, officials disclosed.
