Following weeks of preparation, witnesses for the American Inquiry Commission will face batteries of newspaper cameras, newsreel cameras and microphones in the opening this morning of the Commission’s probe into legal conditions in Nazi Germany at the New York County Lawyers’ Association, 14 Vesey street.
Several witnesses, fearing Nazi reprisals, have been assured that their identities will be kept secret, the American Inquiry Commission announced yesterday. Diplomatic and consular representatives of many nations will view the proceedings from a special section reserved for them.
TO PROBE PEOPLE’S “COURTS”
A salient feature of the probe will be the newly promulgated German People’s Courts, which open their sessions today, coincident with the opening of the Commission’s hearings.
Clarence Darrow, a member of the Commissior, entrained for New York from Chicago yesterday to attend the hearings. Other members expected to be present are George Gordon Battle, Senator William Costigan, Arthur Garfield Hays, Stanley High, Dudley Field Malone, George Z. Medalie and Raymond L. Wise.
Among the witnesses who will offer testimony and submit to examination are Aneurin Eevan, British M. P.; Mrs. ### Williams-Ellis, English author; Dr. Kurt Rosenfeld, former Prussian Minister of Justice, and Dr. Franz Hoellering, refugee German editor.
