An investigation into the Jewish Undertakers’ Association of Greater New York, charged with conducting a monopoly, has been ordered by Supreme Court Justice Faber, acting upon the petition of Attorney-General Hamilton Ward.
Hearings will start next Wednesday, at the New York office of the Attorney-General. John F. Moorey will act as referee, while William B. Groat, Jr., Deputy State Attorney-General, has been designated as prosecutor.
The specific charge made by the attorney-general’s office is that “the Jewish Undertakers’ Association of Greater New York was organized with the sole purpose of effecting an unlawful combination among its membership.”
The following have been subpoenaed: Simon Alpert, Charles Bauman, Harry Nieberg, Sigmund Schwartz, Abraham Brettschneider, Louis Cohen, Abe Gordon, Louis Hirsch and Jacob B. Misikoff.
