An institute of Jewish Law, first of its kind ever established in an academic institution anywhere, was launched here today under the joint auspices of the law faculty of the Hebrew University and the Institute of Jewish Studies.
One of the institute’s foremost tasks will be the compilation of detailed indices of legal material contained in the response, codes (“Poskim”) and collection of ordinances (“Takar not”) and other Jewish literature. The institute will serve interested bodies, such as the Justice Ministry’s legislative department, with the aim of basing Israeli parliamentary legislation on the principles of Jewish law.
