Talks between Israel’s three labor parties–Mapai, Mapam and Achdut Avodah–aimed at a single list for elections to the next Knesset were postponed indefinitely today as a result of the arrest of Mapam leader Aharon Cohen.
The breakdown of talks emerged in a negative reaction by Mapam to a letter from Achdut Avodah in which the latter party expressed regret that its party newspaper had published an article which brought the case into the open. The Mapam reply accepted the expression of regret but added that “the atmosphere created” in connection with the Cohen arrest was such as to make further negotiations impossible. The Mapan reply suggested it would be better “to let time pass so the whole affair can settle after which such talks” could be resumed.
