Interesting details of the investigation into the situation of the Jews in Roumania, carried on by an American investigator, Col. Hammond, are reported here today in a despatch from Czernowitz.
Col. Hammond, who arrived in Czernowitz yesterday, received a Jewish delegation at the office of the Mayor. The delegation consisted of Chief Rabbi Mark, Counsellor Kassner and the Kehillah manager, Weischnitzer. The delegation, which was received by Col. Hammond in the presence of Babianu, Chief of the Cabinet of Prime Minister Averescu, Mayor Shiera and other Roumanian officials, declared that it was not authorized to make any political statements.
Col. Hammond then asked the members of the delegation to give their unofficial impressions. Rabbi Mark and Counselior Kassner replied to several questions. Legally the Jews have equal rights. The Roumanian people is not identified with those who beat the Jews. No pogroms occurred. The Jews hope that Prime Minister Averescu will fulfill his promises to extend protection to the Jewish population. These were a few of the replies given by the members of the delegation in the presence of the Roumanian officials.
During the conversation an obvious uneasiness prevailed among the Jewish members of the delegation.
A dinner was given in the evening by the Roumanian officials in honor of Col. Hammond.
