The Ministry of Interior announced today that the number of permits issued to civilians for carrying weapons has increased 60 percent over 1967. The issuance of gun permits has normally increased by about 10 percent per annum. The weapons involved are mainly pistols and shotguns for hunting, the Ministry said. Israel has no gun control law. Permits are issued more or less freely to anyone who has served in the armed forces – this includes a large portion of the country’s adult population. Permits are denied only when police or security objections are raised.
