William Rufus Abbott, president of the Museum of Science and Industry, founded by Julius Rosenwald, announced that work on the central portion of the interior would go forward at once and would be completed and equipped with exhibits for opening simultaneously with the Century of Progress Exposition.
The exhibits are to include a true coal mine of actual size.
The decision was reached after conferences between the museum trustees and the South Park commissioners. After completion of the external reconstruction of the old Fine Arts Building in Jackson Park, interior work has been discontinued temporarily. Market conditions are said to have delayed the sale of park bonds as well as making inadviseable immediate sale of stock certificates held by the museum, though both parties gave assurance that the entire museum would be completed in the course of time without serious difficulty.
“Funds for this purpose,” Mr. Abbott said, “have been furnished by the Rosenwald estate under arrangements which will avoid the necessity of sacrifice by the museum of any of its securities under the present abnormal conditions of the market.”
