No Jew who had intermarried abroad will be barred from immigration into Israel, Zalman Shragai, head of the Jewish Agency’s immigration department, declared here today.
At a press conference, Mr. Shragai stated that the immigration department does not decide on who is a Jew. “No one’s immigration will be barred,” he declared, “because one member of a couple is not Jewish or because the couple had not been married in accordance with Jewish religious ceremony. We shall find a way of accommodating them within the provisions of traditional Jewish religious law.”
The National Religious Party today warned, in reference to recent statements by Moshe Sharett and Dr. Nahum Goldmann, respectively chairman of the Jewish Agency executive and president of the World Zionist Organization, that such statements could “upset the unity of the nation and the organizational integrity of the Zionist movement.”
