Some 260,000 children were enrolled in Israeli schools at the beginning of the 1950-51 school year, the International Conference for Public Education here was told this week-end.
In a report on education in Israel, Israeli delegate Dr. M. Kahany revealed that this was an increase of 270 percent over the 97,000 children in Israel’s schools in 1948. The report disclosed that an acute shortage of school teachers and school facilities has not yet been solved, leaving Israel with: crowded classrooms; double shifts in many city schools; and substandard school buildings, including even huts and tents in the immigrant areas.
