“international Jewish Finance” Allegation in United States Congress: President Hoover Accused by Con

The cry of “International Jewish Finance” was raised in the United States House of Representatives to-day when President Hoover was accused by Congressman Louis T. MacFadden, Republican Representative for Pennsylvania and former Chairman of the Congress Banking Committee, of having “sold out” the United States in putting forward his “infamous war-debt moratorium proposal” at the bidding of the International bankers, Mr. Paul M. Warburg, Messrs. Kuhn Loeb and Company, of which Mr. Felix M. Warburg is one of the principal partners, and Mr. W. Seligman, who, he alleged, “have been bleeding the country white for the benefit of Germany and themselves”.

Mrs. Florence Kahn, the only Jewish Congresswoman, who succeeded her late husband as Republican Representative for California, shouted “shame!” when Congressman MacFadden made his allegation

Congressman Chiperfield, Republican Representative from Illinois, demanded that Congressman MacFadden should produce proof of his charges. If President Hoover has done this thing, he cried, he is a Judas, and he should be impeached, and if Congressman MacFadden does not do this he is a foul traducer.

In the Senate, Senator Reed, Republican from Pennsylvania, also attacked the war-debt moratorium proposal, describing all debt cancellation proposals as propaganda by international bankers for their own selfish interests.

Senator Hiram Johnson, Republican from California and Chairman of the Senate Immigration Committee, joined in denouncing the cancellation proposals as having been made at “the dictation of the international bankers”.

There is a good deal of resentment being expressed in the House of Representatives at Congressman MacFadden’s outburst. 26 of the 36 Congress Representatives from Congressman MacFadden’s State, Pennsylvania, have signed a statement repudiating his accusations.

Congressman MacFadden has appeared in Congress at least once before in the role of accuser of “international financiers”. This was almost exactly a year ago, on December 17th., when he attacked President Hoover’s appointment of Mr. Eugene Meyer as Chairman of the United States Federal Reserve System.

If you want to turn the Federal Reserve System over to international financiers, place Eugene Meyer in that particular post at this time, Representative MacFadden, who was then still Chairman of the Banking and Currency Committee of the House of Representatives, said attacking Mr. Meyer as an “international banker”, and demanding that the House should reject his nomination. Mr. Meyer has been closely connected during his whole financial career with banking houses of international reputation, he declared, adding “he had a very close connection with J. P. Morgan and Company, and as head of the War Finance Corporation, and in carrying on its activities, those close relationships were actively disclosed. He is a Wall Street man”.

Mr. MacFadden also said that Mr. Meyer is a brother-in-law of Mr. George Blumenthal, the Jewish banker who lives in Paris, and, as he was given to understand, represents the Rothschild interests and is a liaison officer between the French Government and the Morgan Company.

Senator David A. Reed, of Pennsylvania, who, too, has alleged dictation by “international bankers”, is one of the chief advocates of alien registration in America, and in this connection the late Louis Marshall engaged in a lengthy correspondence with him in 1926, when there was an alien registration bill in Congress.

You have been one of the leaders of the movement to amend our immigration laws with the deliberate purpose not only of cutting off immigration, but of differentiating between immigrants on the basis of the lands of their nativity, or of their so-called racial stock, Mr. Marshall wrote to him. You have tried to put into our legislation a division of mankind into Nordics and non-Nordics. It is only pseudo-anthropologists who recognise that there ever was any such race as the Nordics, and leading authorities have demonstrated that the Whole Nordic idea is a myth. Until 1916 nobody had ever heard of that race. At that time Madison Grant invented it as a substitute for the Teutonic stock, which had been apotheosised by the unspeakable Stuart Houston Chamberlain.

There is another Senator Reed in the Senate, Senator James A. Reed, of Missouri, who, too, has had some connection with the allegation of a Jewish international conspiracy. This was when he appeared in 1927 as Chief Counsel for Mr. Benry Ford, to uphold his antisemitic charges made in his book “The International Jew”, in the libel action brought by Mr. Aaron Sapiro, which resulted in Mr. Ford’s retraction of his antisemitism.
