The International Labor Office through its Director, Albert Thomas, has accepted the offer of Edward A. Filene, Boston Jewish philanthropist, to provide a fund of $25,000 to conduct an international survey into real wages.
The gift and the message which accompanied the offer were discussed at the International Labor Conference which is now in session here.
Mr. Filene declares in his message that high wages are necessary not merely for moral but above all for practical reasons in the interests of the employers themselves and for the general prosperity of the country. He cites the case of Henry Ford who has made low prices and high wages yield amazing profits.
It is believed that the inquiry will have far reaching consequences, in changing conditions in Europe by revealing how low real wages are in some European countries.
